Archive Drop: Flux Hound — Demolished Man Pulp Covers
In 2016, Melbourne dark-jazz outfit Flux Hound released Demolished Man (VVR002) inspired by Alfred Bester’s 1953 novel of the same name. The album tightens rhythms into paranoid, unpleasant climaxes.
Band member Zachery Bryan created a limited track-by-track set of pulp-style covers to accompany the record. The series follows Grease McDougall after he finds a scrap of paper bearing a moving diagram, and everything starts to slip.
1: Black Diagram LISTENGrease McDougall opens a piece of paper in a dead man’s basement, finding a diagram in motion. Every flicker of the pattern drags him deeper into his own noise.
4: Spectra LISTENGrease McDougall sees her in the rain, exposing every pain, emotion, and lie he once had buried. Each step closer unravels another memory. Desire becomes instruction. Instruction becomes ruin.
7: Soft Apocrypha LISTENGrease McDougall steals a self-fulfilling manuscript. Each page exposes a new truth he thought he’d buried forever. Each revelation strips another layer of will. The manuscript wants a witness.
10: Chasing Zero LISTENGrease McDougall enters the shadow district. A mysterious figure tails him. When our hero confronts the figure, it disappears, leaving him alone with his greatest enemy, himself.
2: Afterafter LISTENGrease McDougall wakes in a non-existent hour where time stretches and faces blur. A sultry voice beckons him to a nearby alley, his only alternative a room dictating his thoughts.
5: Tombs Without Architects LISTENGrease McDougall descends into an underground city erased from record. Hallways tangle, doors multiply, coffins wait. A note on the lid of a flimsy pine box bears a message for him.
8: Flesh Tuning LISTENGrease McDougall is circled by white coats who claim his mind must be harvested. Upon his escape, he realizes the laboratory to be a human modification centre where only perfection survives.
11: My Kingdom For A Lick Of Raven LISTENDestroyed, Grease McDougall stumbles upon a silhouette outside a whorehouse. Aroused, he begs her for just one lick of her thigh, only to find she bears the one truth Grease has always been afraid of.
3: Lamb Of Data LISTENBreaking into a laboratory, Grease McDougall awakens an all-knowing machine. Something within the circuitry desires a companion. Our hero runs, but the machine follows.
6: Demolished Man LISTENRealizing his mind’s collapse, Grease McDougall is pushed deeper into the city. Voices in his head close ranks and, amid his demolition, the truth about himself hits hard.
9: A Fern Ate My Synthesizer LISTENGrease McDougall escapes only to discover a busker screaming as vines drag his keyboard into the thicket. The plant changes course and attacks our hero, lusting after his demise.
